about

"Kid," is a posthumous collaboration between my wildly creative Dad, Jim Morris and myself. Its sound reflects many of the elements of music we both appreciate .... a funky drummer, horns, soulful vocals, chord changes, harmonies, fender rhodes, etc.

I recently received a handwritten letter from my Grandfather which included a sheet of lyrics to a song called "Kid." My Dad had written them years ago and like many of his creations, are undiscovered treasures. He passed in 2012 and left behind an unbelievable amount of creative pieces. Primarily his unique artwork is what most who knew him remember him by but he was also a very prolific songwriter. It's been years since we wrote together. When I got the lyrics, Papa (my Grandfather) said he thought I might like these and that maybe I could find 'something' to do with them. They sat for a week or so until one morning I caught the urge to pick them up and go upstairs to my studio. I placed the lyrics on the piano and out of nowhere the outline to the song just poured out. The chord changes, melody and vibe was there as if I had heard it before. After sketching out the general idea, I began production. It was important that it sound like something he would dig as well. Like all of us in our family, my Dad had very diverse tastes. He was way into Funk, Soul, Classic Rock, etc. So I thought I'd attempt a song that combined elements of vintage soul with a classy horn sound, big harmonies and some jazzy changes. Each instrument and vocal track was recorded and mixed with the utmost attention to detail in an attempt to capture the tones of the music we grooved to over the years. The final mix was rendered and rounded in sweet analog warmth. All in all, I'm proud of "Kid," and I like to think it's a record he would stand by too. As I continue on this endless musical journey, I'm looking forward to rediscovering and discovering more of his songs. True art lives forever as does the artist. Happy Father's Day Dad, it was a blast jammin' with you again!

lyrics

I heard all the stories about you Kid
You broke some hearts, yes you did
I'm not gonna let that bother me Kid
You got my heart thumpin', gonna blow my lid

Hey Kid, look what you did
Hey Kid, look what you did
Hey Kid, look what you did
Hey Kid, look what you did

I heard all the stories about you Kid
You broke some hearts, yes you did
Hey Kid, I gotta confession
I want a one on one session

Hey Kid, look what you did
Hey Kid, look what you did
Hey Kid, look what you did
Hey Kid, look what you did

I heard all the stories about you Kid
You broke some hearts, yes you did
I heard all the stories, yes I did
You broke some hearts, yes you did

Hey Kid, I don't care what you did
